Playing Experience

Ohio University Ensembles (2022-Present)

I was accepted into The Most Exciting Band in the Land, the Ohio University Marching 110, in 2022. The 110 requires that every member gives 110% effort in every facet of performance, whether it be music, marching, or dancing.

During my time with the 110 I have performed at many amazing venues and events:  a Cleveland Browns halftime show, as an exhibition band at Bands Of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis (video to the right), at the 2022 and 2024 MAC football championships in Detroit, the 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl, the 2024 Cure Bowl in Orlando, a Cincinnati Bengals halftime show, at the MAC Basketball tournament in Cleveland, and in London, England for the London Band Week, as well as numerous performances around campus at Ohio University.

I am honored to have been selected as a Marching Section Leader for the 2024-25 season. I was responsible for leading marching sectionals, providing feedback on visual performances, organizing and communicating announcements and schedules for the trumpet section, and setting the example for younger members of the section.

Other Ohio University ensembles I have participated in so far include Wind Symphony, Trumpet Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz II, and Varsity Band.

Wind Symphony also traveled with the Marching 110 to London, England, and performed at the Holy Sepulchre National Musician's Church.

You can view recordings of these ensembles on the Ohio University School of Music YouTube channel.

Gahanna Lincoln High School Ensembles (2018-2022)

I was in the marching band at Gahanna Lincoln High School for three years. As a section leader, my responsibility was to ensure quality musical and marching performance, including organizing sectionals and performing memorization checks.

Notable performances:

2019 Defiance Band Spectacular

2021 Chicago Magnificent Mile Parade

The two jazz bands at GLHS are for-audition groups. I was accepted into Jazz I in my sophomore year. As a junior, I was the solo chair, and as a senior, I was the lead trumpet. I was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award as a senior.

The concert bands at GLHS are for audition beginning sophomore year. Gold Band, the top group, is an OMEA class AA band. I was accepted into Gold Band all three years, including as principal trumpet as a senior.

 Notable performances:

World Premiere of Through the Valley by Major Ryan Nowlin

Numerous Superior (I) ratings at OMEA district and state events (Recording includes commentary. I am the soloist on the second selection starting at 5:15.)

Solo Work

I have prepared the following solo literature for contests, auditions, performance lab, and juries (in no particular order):

 Suite for Trumpet (Latham)

Petite Piece Concertante (Balay)

Sonata (Stevens)

Fantaisie en Eb (Barat)

Concerto in Eb (Neruda)

Andante et Allegretto (Balay)

All 'Antica (Goeyens)

The Maid of the Mist (Clarke)

Concert Etude (Goedicke)

In April 2025 I will be performing my recital, a celebration of all my years of trumpet playing. The rep I will be playing on this recital is:

 Sonata, Mvt I (Stevens)

Sonata, Mvt II (Ewazen)

Prelude et Ballade (Balay)

Childhood (Canadian Brass Quintet)

Other Groups

I was also honored to be selected to the OMEA All-State Orchestra for the 2022 OMEA conference.

I participated in Columbus Youth Jazz for three semesters from 2019-21 and joined the Columbus Youth Symphonic Band for the 2021-22 season.

Another important part of my career was being on the Band Council for my high school. Band Council is a very important part of GLHS Bands culture and acts as a connection between the students and the band staff. The council also plans social events and fundraisers that benefit the band community. My position on the council was Treasurer, and I was on the social media committee as well.

I have participated in and performed with a few community bands, including the Dublin Wind Symphony, Clintonville Community Band, and the Big Walnut Big Band.

Teaching Experience

High School Band Camps

Beginning July 2023, I have worked as a tech at many high school band camps. I have worked as a trumpet and high brass tech. My duties included running sectionals, helping individual students with playing and marching, and learning by observing other techs and the directors. I have worked with a variety of programs, including rural schools, urban schools, competition-style bands, show bands, large programs, and small programs.

I have worked with the following schools and directors:

Licking Heights High School (Meg Beavers), July 2023, July 2024

Groveport Madison High School (Jonah Hurtig), August 2023

Whetstone High School (Rashad Mitchell), August 2023

Fredericktown High School (Andrew Hollenbaugh), July 2024

Lesson Planning, Teacher Observations and Student Teaching

Beginning in the Fall of 2024, I have had the opportunity to observe the classrooms of respected music teachers and in some cases I have been asked to prepare and deliver lesson plans to their classes. I have enjoyed creating these lessons and they have helped me prepare for my career as a music educator.

Student Band Staff and Leadership Roles

I have received the following leadership roles throughout high school and college:

2021: GLHS Marching Band Squad Leader

2022: GLHS Marching Band Section Leader, Jazz I Lead Trumpet, Gold Band Section Leader, Band Council Treasurer

2024: OU Marching 110 Marching Section Leader, OU School of Music Student Ambassador

Related Experience

National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Chapter 231

I am a member of the Ohio University chapter of NAfME. The chapter meets regularly to provide resources and seminars for developing music educators. Additionally, the OU chapter is often asked to volunteer at OMEA Adjudicated Events, and local music festivals, and is active in helping at School of Music events. NAfME provides the opportunity to attend conferences such as the OMEA professional development conference.

Kappa Kappa Psi, Alpha Delta Chapter

I joined the Kappa Kappa Psi music service fraternity in spring 2024. The Alpha Delta chapter organizes service projects that benefit and support musical arts at Ohio University and the local community in southeast Ohio. KKY is a highly professional and widely respected organization across the country. I enjoy connecting with peers and colleagues while supporting the arts that have made me who I am.

Conducting

At Ohio University, I have been honored to study under some amazing conductors, those being Dr. William Talley, Dr. Richard Suk, Mr. Nathan Wise, and Mr. Adam Steere. These studies include technique work, score preparation and interpretation, podium time in front of a small wind ensemble of peers, and private lessons.

Extra-Music Skills

I have experience with making, managing, and running social media accounts and communication networks for peers, parents, and students. I have ideas of how to streamline communication between these groups and knowledge of how to implement them.

I have experience with minor instrument repairs and cleaning, especially brass instruments, and will be receiving instrument repair lessons in the spring of 2025.

I am tech-savvy and a quick learner when it comes to both computer software and hardware.

Since the fall of 2024, I have been an employee at the OU Music and Dance Library. This has given me experience with music library organization and outreach, and additionally has provided me with access to important resources that will help my career in music education.
